St. Vincent Pallotti was born April 21, 1795 in Rome. During his childhood he had a special devotion to Mary and desired to help anyone in need just as Jesus would have done.  He was ordained in 1818 and continued his ministry to the people of Rome. During his lifetime he was a teacher, spiritual director, founder of a religious order and visionary.

His devotion to Mary came from his innermost desire to know Jesus. St. Vincent knew that in order to know Jesus and to enter into the infinite love that God has for us he had to know Mary. Because of the mystical union with Mary he was able to perform all of the works he did with the Gospel message always at the forefront of his actions and words. Some of these works included:

Developing schools
Religious education programs for the youth
Creating orphanages especially for those left behind in the cholera epidemic of Rome.
Developing a food stamp program for the poor and homeless during the cholera epidemic.
Evening classes for working adults

St. Vincent was endowed with the gift of prophecy. In anticipation of the Catholic Action movement that would come more than 100 years later, he founded the Union of Catholic Apostolate in 1835. This is an organization of sisters, brothers, priests and laity.

Together they, we, are to participate in the mission of the Church through prayer, acts of charity, conversion and social justice. The charism that he fostered was and still is today -

“Spread the Gospel message by any and all means!”

This means that if you are given the gift of teaching, then teach and spread the Gospel message. If your gift is for healing then heal with the infinite love of God. No matter what your gifts are you are expected to use those gifts to spread the Gospel message to everyone with whom you come in contact. This is what is expected of every Pallottine whether consecrated or lay member.

St. Vincent died in Rome on January 22, 1850. He was canonized on Jan. 20, 1963.  His feastday is celebrated January 22.

All the actions of my life, even the most necessary and trifling ones, must be ruled by love in order to aspire to the infinite love.
